Design & Composition:
Texture Exploration

This three-part project examined texture within the constraints of specific materials, emphasizing the significance of approaching challenges with a creative mindset while operating within established parameters.

Materials/Tools:

- Black acrylic paint

- Bristol paper

- Elmer’s Glue

Stage 1

The first portion of the assignment involved using strictly unconventional tools and objects to make black acrylic texture prints, exploring the variety of methods that can be used to create an effective texture, eliminating all other factors beyond positive and negative space. This stimulated out of the box thinking and placed emphasis on the design process.

One texture sample was selected for a color exploration (Adobe Illustrator) to examine how varying tones and contrast affect how the texture is perceived.

Stage 2

The second stage introduced physical texture in addition to visual texture. Adhering to strict material guidelines, one of the previous textures was recreated using only bristol and glue. This added the effects of light, shadows, and depth which brought both new challenges and new tools for creating texture.

Stage 3

The final assignment in the project was to use a 3-dimensional sculpture to enhance the experience of the previous texture. Recreating the texture in the context of a 3D shape proved to be very difficult, and required an intense level of creativity, attention to detail, and understanding of texture principles.
